Methodology
All the ten weekly presentations have a similar set-up.
Day 1 introduces the five target words with their respective definitions. Connecting a word’s meaning with its spelling reinforces the students’ memory and word retention. At the end of this presentation, students are asked to complete their first spelling activity consisting of syllable spelling. Syllable spelling, often overlooked, offers significant benefits for young spellers. It enhances phonemic awareness, improves word decoding skills, and fosters a deeper understanding of word structure.
On day 2, students are encouraged to go over the five words and decide which letter positioning or tricky letters in each of the words they need to remember. This promotes visual discrimination, critical thinking skills and self-correction skills. This short activity is followed by a full-word spelling practice of the five words.
Day 3 adds a further layer of learning by incorporating the synonyms for each target word. This aims at holistic learning and enhancement of word relationships. Additionally, associating a word with its meaning and synonyms often leads to better retention of both the word’s spelling and its usage. Model sentences are provided and students are first asked to find a synonym for the target word. This is followed by two brief activities: (i) a synonym word search puzzle and a synonym match activity.
On day 4, students are requested to compose sentences for each of the target word. Some of the sentences written by students may be discussed during class.
Day 5 is assessment day. A multiple-choice test is provided and students are to indicate the correct spelling of the word. The clues in the test consist of the word’s definition, for further reinforcement.
